Glamping at The Farm Park

It’s heating up on the farm!

It’s hot. In fact it’s very hot! The summer heatwave means we’re seeing lots of sun cream, wide-brimmed hats and ice-creams around the Farm Park at the moment. There are plenty of ways for our visitors to stay cool and safe in the sun and similarly the Farm Park staff are making sure the animals are calm and comfortable too. Just like us, livestock need shade and water when the temperatures rise. In the paddocks there are shady spots which the animals will seek out for themselves as soon as the air begins to warm and their water troughs are getting topped up throughout the day. Our first Members Party was a success!

Last Friday evening, we held our first Members party. This event was exclusively for our members, but they could also bring up to 5 friends along for free. It was a great atmosphere: the sun was shining, the BBQ sizzling and acoustic guitar vocalist Drew Hall was strumming some tunes. In addition to the Farm Park being open, there were some extra activities on offer. The Farm Safari took a special detour and went behind the scenes to the Farm and there were also talks about our Rare Breeds and the history of the Farm Park. Colin and his clan are off the Watchlist!

You might have heard about the Rare Breeds Survival Trust (RBST), you might have not. They were founded in 1973 (with the help of our founder Joe Henson) and work to promote and save UK native breeds of farm animals. The RBST have had many triumphs over the years and 2018 is no exception! This year the Whiteface Dartmoor sheep have, for the first time in decades, made their way off the Rare Breeds Watchlist. This means that there are now more than 3,000 registered breeding females and the breed are no longer considered to be in immediate danger of extinction.
