Iron Age Piglets

Our Iron Age piglets have arrived

Yesterday our wonderful Iron Age sow farrowed (gave birth to) her litter of piglets. Nic Nic is 8 years old and tends to have two litters a year. The gestation period for pigs is three months, three weeks and three days.   The Iron Age pig is a breed that Joe (Adam’s Dad) created for a BBC series in the seventies that needed an authentic looking Iron Age pig. They are a mix of Wild Boar from London Zoo and a Tamworth sow from our farm. Archie the Highland bull

Introducing Archie

Earlier this year, we discovered that our lovely bull Eric (a firm Countryfile favourite) was sadly infertile. He has since been re-homed to a nearby patch of land where he can happily retire. Following in his footsteps is our new Highland bull, Archie. Eric will be a tough act to follow, but we think Archie’s going to be just as much of a character. Adam bought him from Her Majesty the Queen’s Balmoral Estate in May 2014. He was born on February 12th 2013 and his official name is Gilleasbuig 1st of Balmoral… but we like the name Archie!
